Why an export buyer should care what China is buying
It's tempting to skip this on the grounds that domestic retail has nothing to do with your market. That's a mistake, and here's the reasoning.
What the domestic customer is buying this year decides what the factories around Lecong are tooled up to make cheaply next year. Volume drives tooling, tooling drives cost, and cost decides what you can be quoted. Reading the domestic floor is reading your own future price list.
It also shows you finished retail presentation: how the pieces are styled, lit and grouped by people who sell to end customers every day. If you run a shop, that's free research.
How to read the prices without being misled
The tag here is a domestic retail price, and it includes the mall, the brand, the delivery and the warranty. It's not two or three steps from your export cost, it's a completely different construction.
So don't do arithmetic on it. Use it for relative information instead: which categories carry a premium, which finishes are commanding money, what's discounted and therefore probably over produced.
Relative signals from this floor are genuinely useful. The absolute numbers belong to a different pricing structure, so lean on the signals instead.
Tracing a brand back to a factory
If you see a product here you'd like to sell, the brand is a thread you can pull. Many domestic brands manufacture in or near Guangdong, and some will deal with export buyers directly.
Photograph the brand name in Chinese, not your transliteration of it. That single detail is what makes the search possible afterwards, and it's the step people skip.
Size and layout
A national retail chain rather than a Lecong wholesale hall, which is why it reads so differently.
Before you walk in
It's a shopping mall, not a wholesale market. Don't benchmark your export price against the tags here.
Still worth two hours.
