The contact list is the real product of a first trip
You'll place one order on your first trip. You'll place twenty over the following three years, and most of those will go to people you met on the first one.
That reframes what these halls are for. You're not only shopping, you're building a list, and the list is worth more than any single price you negotiate on the day.
The showrooms here are useful for it because there are a lot of them and they're not selling identical things. Breadth is the point.
What to record so the contact is still useful next year
A name card on its own is nearly worthless twelve months later. You won't remember which showroom it came from or what they were good at.
Photograph the card next to the product, in the same shot. That one habit solves it. Then add three things to your phone notes on the spot: what they're strongest at, roughly what they quoted, and one detail about the person.
The last one sounds soft and it's the one that works. Messaging somebody who remembers you gets an answer. Messaging a stranger from a card gets a price list.
Where the unusual requests get solved
When a customer asks for something odd, a specific size, an unusual material, a small run of something nobody stocks, this is the kind of hall where somebody says yes.
The premium halls sell what they've designed. The smaller showrooms here are much closer to the workshops and are often willing to make something that isn't in the catalogue. It's slower and it needs a drawing, and it's frequently the only way to get the thing made at all.
Size and layout
One of the affordable halls buyers group together on a single half day.
Before you walk in
Collect name cards even from showrooms you don't buy from. Half of sourcing this market is having somebody to message in six months.
Photograph the tag and the label, not just the product.
