Minimum Orders: What Is Real and What Is Negotiable

The minimum order you’re quoted is usually a proxy for something else, and once you work out what it’s a proxy for, it stops being a wall.

Most MOQs are about the container, not the product

When an export focused supplier says the minimum is high, they usually mean they don’t want to deal with a shipment too small to be worth the paperwork. The number attached to that feeling is often somewhat arbitrary.

Which is why the useful question isn’t can you lower the minimum. It’s: if I fill a container across several of your products, does the per model minimum still apply. Very often it doesn’t.

The wholesale halls behave differently from factories

A showroom in the Lecong halls that holds stock can sell you one piece without it being strange, and personal buyers furnishing an apartment do this all the time.

A factory quoting an export price for a production run is a different conversation, because they’re pricing a setup. If you only need small quantities, the halls are your market and the factories mostly aren’t.

Ways small buyers get taken seriously

Buy across categories rather than deep in one. A mixed container of forty different things is a real order even if no single line is large.

Be specific and quick. Suppliers discount small orders from buyers who are decisive and clear, because the cost of serving you is low. Vague buyers with small orders are the ones who get quoted a wall.

Say honestly that this is a first order and that you intend to reorder. That’s a normal and credible thing to say, and it changes how the number is set far more often than haggling does.

Consolidation is the real answer for small volumes

If you can’t fill a container, you don’t have to. Consolidators in the Lecong area merge cargo from several buyers into one box and this is completely routine.

It costs more per cubic metre than a full container and far less than giving up. For a first order it’s usually the sensible route, and it lets you test a market before you commit to volume.
